20.07.2022: Note on the allocation of final thesis positions
This semester, we are receiving an exceptionally high number of applications. However, the capacities to supervise your theses comprehensively and with the necessary and usual time and quality are limited.
We are therefore forced to make a selection. Here, not only the grades are decisive, but especially the specialization of our field in our lectures and seminars.
Bachelor
If you would like to write your Bachelor's thesis at our department, you can apply online by 01. February (for the following summer term) or by 01. August (for the following winter term) with the following documents:
- Bachelor's or Master's application form
- Curriculum vitae in table form
- Current overview of grades
Please send the documents in one (!) PDF file without signature to abschlussarbeiten.irwp.wiwitu-dortmundde. Application documents with more than one PDF file cannot be considered!
You will first receive a confirmation of receipt from us and, after checking your documents and the places available in the semester, an acceptance or rejection within 2 weeks of receipt of your application. In case of acceptance for a bachelor’s thesis, please note the mandatory completion of the project seminar before starting the bachelor thesis. You will be automatically registered for this.
Within 4 weeks, the topic will be handed out or the proposal for the project seminar will be accepted. Students who are enrolled in Business Administration and Economics have to prepare an exposé, which should not exceed three pages, and submit it after a maximum of 2 weeks (students of Industrial Engineering and Business Mathematics are exempt from this requirement). 2 weeks after the submission of the exposé, there is a presentation of the concept or the exposé (students of Industrial Engineering and Business Mathematics are exempt from this requirement).
2 weeks later the start of the bachelor’s thesis takes place, either on 15.04. (for the summer term) or 15.10. (for the winter term). Business Administration and Economics students will have 9 weeks to submit their bachelor’s thesis via EXABase. Industrial Engineering and Business Mathematics students will have 12 weeks to submit their bachelor’s thesis via EXABase. Approximately 4 weeks after the submission of the bachelor’s thesis, the oral exam will take place.
Please also consider that you need a certain number of ECTS in completed modules in order to apply for the bachelor’s thesis: For Business and Economics you need 90 ECTS, for Industrial Engineering you need 165 ECTS and for Business Mathematics you need 120 ECTS. Please also note that, according to the examination regulations, at least 120 CP in complected modules must be available at the time of registration with the examination office. You are welcome to write both in English or German language.
Master
If you would like to write your Master's thesis at our department, you can apply online by 01. February (for the following summer semester) or 01. August (for the following winter semester) with the following documents:
- Bachelor's or Master's application form
- Curriculum vitae in table form
- Current overview of grades

Within 9 weeks, the topic will be handed out or there will be a discussion of your proposal. Please note that according to § 13 para. 3. P. 1 MPO 2019, the topic of the master’s thesis should normally be chosen from the study profile taken according to § 12 para. 1 p. 3 MPO 2019 (in this case study profile A: Accounting & Finance).
Three weeks later, the master’s thesis starts, either on 15.04. (for the summer term) or 15.10. (for the winter term). Business Administration and Economics students will have 17 weeks to submit their master’s thesis via EXABase. Industrial Engineering and Business Mathematics students will have 24 weeks to submit their master’s thesis via EXABase. Approximately 4 weeks after the submission of the master’s thesis, the oral exam will take place.
